When hydrochloric acid is added, it turns yellow-brown and then gradually fades; when sodium hydroxide is added, it almost completely fades and a dark purple precipitate is precipitated.

Brilliant Green SF (light yellow) can be used as a counterstain in cytology or as a substitute for aniline blue in Gomori’s procedure. It is a pulp stain that can be used for animal tissue staining, contrast staining with iron hematoxylin or other nuclear dyes, cytoplasm and fiber staining in plant histology, and co-staining pollen tubes with acid fuchsin.
